イギリスの2人組、Wham!の楽曲です。
1984年12月3日にリリースされました。
ボーカルのジョージ・マイケルが制作、プロデュースしています。
日本人なら、いや世界中多くの人が一度は聞いたことがある超人気のクリスマスソングで、数えきれないほど多くのアーティストによってカバーされてきた曲。
1984年のリリース当初、残念ながらイギリスのシングル・チャートで5週連続2位を記録。1位にはなれませんでした。
有名アーティストが集まってチャリティ目的で結成したグループBand aidの楽曲、”do they know its christmas”が1位だったからです。
(ちなみにジョージ・マイケルさんはBand aidにも参加しています。)
そうして長い時を経て、TikTokなどの台頭により、2021年元旦についにイギリスシングルチャート1位に輝きます。

もう耳にこびりついているこの曲。
わたしは小学生低学年の頃は英語読めませんでしたが、この曲は聴きすぎて耳で覚えて歌えていました。
1年前に散々傷つけられたのに、それでもまだ愛してもらえるかもしれないことを期待している歌詞。
ちょっと惨めな心を表現したクリスマスソングです。
内容を知ると「何でこれがクリスマスの定番？」と不思議に思ってしまいます。
でも人間は、悲しい感情にどっぷり浸かるのが好きですからね！
